So, I ordered a bunch of toys recently from Discovery Toys (none of them for my kids, bad mama) that altogether cost $75. They came in a huge box--I'm not sure why, the toys weren't that big--that was full of packing peanuts. The kids got really excited when they saw that toys were in the box, but when I explained that the toys weren't for them, they got excited about the box. Now we've all heard (or said it ourselves) that you can buy a kid a $500 toy and he'll play with the box, but they had a GRAND time! I swear it was worth the $75 for someone else's kid just to get the box and the packing peanuts!! They played for over an hour. Stephen played "find the treasure" and Zachary played "make a mess". I saved the box and peanuts for a rainy day (or a "mommy's feeling lazy" day).

Great idea! When we got our dryer my boys played with the box for over a month. I could never let them play with packing peanuts because Firecracker kept eating them. Lucky friends you have to be getting discovery toys! I'm too cheap to give such nice presents.
Oh yes, the famous "play with the Box". And how clever of you to save it for when you need another break! Anything that keeps 2 small boys occupied for an hour is worth repeating. kep and I were having a very bad day with the daycare kids a few years ago and dragged out a section of the newspaper and let them tear the whole thing up into tiny little pieces. Holy cow--they had such a good time! And then we had a whole 'nuther game gathering the pieces and sticking them in a trash bad. THEN everybody got a handful of baby wipes to clean the ink off their hands. It is truly amazing how entertained they can be with an activity that is a big fat waste of time.
That many Discovery Toys and not for your children? Wow! :)
